The Feldenkrais Method®
"...it's a funny way of looking at things when you suddenly begin to realize that there is a way of conducting oneself so that you feel yourself growing in your own way, by just appreciating what movement is, what it means, how it grew in the human species..."
~Moshe Feldenkrais in The Master Moves
The Feldenkrais Method® is a form of education that uses movement as a context for learning. In every lesson, some form of movement is performed. But the purpose of the lesson is to foster a deeper understanding of action. We do that by training our awareness of our body in movement.
We reach our highest potential when our actions are informed by what we sense, feel and think. But frequently, action becomes habituated. When that happens, our actions no longer reflect our sensory, emotional and intellectual abilities, but instead become a pattern that repeats over and over, regardless of the context.
Feldenkrais lessons provide the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of our habits and patterns by observing them. There is a saying that once a phenomenon is observed, it is changed. This is a very common experience in Feldenkrais lessons. Each movement provides us with a new opportunity to observe our patterns and discern if they hinder us in some way, and if so, to change them.
